Motivational Speaker

Florence at Mother's Walk for Health -1Dynamic Speaker - 2
Florence at the Mother's Walk For Health sponsored by the 5-a-day Program

Diabetes And Me PosterHaitian-American Actress, Producer, and Director, Florence Regina, speaks about her challenges growing up with type 1 diabetes and how she learned to achieve her goals. She is now speaking and motivating others to move toward their success.

Florence became a speaker back in 2004, when she had been a member of the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Diabetes Association, African American Task Force. During that time, she spoke on their behalf at several events, sharing her life experiences and achievements in living with diabetes.

She speaks about what she knows best, her life experience, overcoming obstacles, and viewing her challenges as opportunities rather than as setbacks. Sharing her experience with a very light hearted sense of humor really makes it easy to reach her audience.

She came from Haiti at a very young age, then developed diabetes. That has given her a lot of experience in coping with challenges and reaching goals, working in the entertainment industry.

During her engagements, she also shares her thought-provoking documentary, DIABETES AND ME: Alone In The Crowd, giving insight about the diabetes experience from people who deal with it everyday.

Some of Florence's speaking engagements have included:

  • Los Angeles Department of Water & Power
  • University of California Santa Barbara
  • Center for Community & Family Services
  • East Los Angeles College
  • UC Cooperative Extension
  • Los Angeles Region Latino & Children's 5 a Day Campaigns

Mandino In a Box directed by Daheli Hall; Comedy -Mandino In a Box is an unorthodox look at romance and the black woman's quest for the ever-ellusive black man. A black male lover doll seems like the perfect solution. In love, one must look outside the box.

Bohio directed by Jean Willy Gerdes; Documentary -"Bohio, The Descent of the Lwa", is a short documentary giving us just a glimpse of how Haitian Vodou, derived from ancient African Vodou, has inspired the Haitian artist Hersza Barjon. She has produced a collection of paintings based on the description of the Haitian pantheon given by "Deita", in her book: "La Legende des Loa Vodou Haitiens".

Breeze directed by Barbara Sanon; Drama -The essence of a dream is explored as young Rosie steps out of her Brooklyn brownstone and enters a fantasy space of women. Rosie's escape reveals a moment of contact between girlhood and beyond.

Courage des Femme (Women's courage) directed by Arnold Antonin; Documentary -Two women live breaking stones like the former prisoners of Haiti.

Bringing Up BayBay produced by Florence Regina; Comedy Does Pam Wilcox know how she'll transcend her low-grade, low-rent cable show to ascend to the ranks of "Entertainment Reporter Extraordinaire?" The short film "Bringing Up BayBay" brings you backstage, up close and too damned personal, in some of the funniest moments you'll ever recognize as true.

Delivering Louverture directed by Michelson Civil; Drama -A mother sacrifices everything to get her son out of Haiti and into the United States.

Brooklyn Racine produced by Magali Damas; Documentary - "Brooklyn Racine" explores what happens when young immigrants take voudou-based walking music from the hills of Haiti and reinvent it on the streets of New York. Through this vibrant and explosive music the documentary reveals a rarely-seen portrait of music and cultural activism in the Haitian-American experience.

The Violence directed by Michele Stevenson; Documentary Rarely are Haitian women heard describing the outrage and impact of domestic violence on their lives and the lives of their children. The thought-provoking and absorbing 10 minute trailer follows three survivors of domestic violence. Presenting the rarely heard voice of Haitian battered women, this important film begins to offer valuable insight into the contradictions and complexities of domestic violence in the Haitian immigrant communities of New York City.

Solus produced by Benjamin Louis; Drama - A young Haitian woman tries to over come the painful memories of her past.

Diabetes Documentary Shines Light Around the World

Soleil Films presented it’s documentary feature “Diabetes and Me” to world broadcasters in Cannes at MIP-TV last week. More than just another health documentary, “Diabetes and Me” shows what it is like to live with disease from the viewpoint of the ones with the disease and those around them.

Los Angeles April 7, 2006 – In it's final stages of production, Soleil Films’ documentary "Diabetes and Me" is about living with diabetes. Richard Ellman of the International Producers Group, who was recently signed to represent the project, has just returned from Cannes with much enthusiam after having had several very positive meetings with programmers about the documentary.

Florence Regina, the movie’s producer, director and main subject says, “When I first found out I had Diabetes, I thought I was the only one in the world.” Florence is an actor and filmmaker who is best known as the woman who dances with Ellen Degeneres in an American Express commercial. She has had Type 1 diabetes for almost 40 years. Celebrities such as B.B. King and Halle Berry are only 2 examples of the more than 20 million people domestically and 170 million worldwide who have diabetes. It is hard to believe anyone would feel alone in this crowd, but as Florence interviewed dozens of people of all colors, backgrounds and economic levels with diabetes, she found that she was not alone in feeling alone.

Diabetes is a hot topic and has been covered in the news, in health documentaries and even on The Oprah Winfrey Show, but even with all that coverage Florence felt that none of these reports expressed what it is really like to live and cope with the disease on a day-to-day basis. She says, “I focus on diabetes because it’s what I have lived with most of my life, but this documentary relates to everybody who has ever felt they are on the outside because of their lifestyle, the way they look, or an illness they might have.”

“Diabetes and Me” focuses on Florence’s life with the disease, but we also hear from a myriad of other who relate their experiences from failed relationships, to lost jobs, to lost lives. Florence’s husband, David Lipson, who is the film’s co-producer says, “When you see stories about diseases, it’s always the big drama moments. There are a lot more moments in a person’s life than just diagnosis, cure, and death, and chronic diseases require real moment to moment living. That’s what Florence is sharing. And we also give voice to the families and loved ones who are affected just as much, if not sometimes more, than the one with the disease.”

“Diabetes and Me” has the support of the Children with Diabetes and is currently seeking finishing funds for post-production.
